Oak Rectangular Dining Table - Made to Measure
Oak Dining Table Rectangular — Classic Solid Wood Custom Made
A rectangular oak dining table is the most popular combination in Dutch dining rooms. The rectangular shape fits in almost any room, offers the most seating per square meter, and matches the timeless look of oak wood. At Industrial Home, we custom-make every rectangular oak dining table — your dimensions, your finish, your base.
Why a rectangular oak dining table?
Of all shapes, the rectangle is functionally the most efficient for a dining table. Most people sit along the long sides, and the short ends offer extra seating for guests. A rectangular table fits perfectly along a wall in a smaller dining room but also stands freely in a more spacious kitchen-living room. The combination with oak wood makes it extra special: no two tables are the same, thanks to the unique grain of solid oak.
Oak is also one of the strongest types of wood for dining tables. It is hard (Janka hardness 5.9 kN), wear-resistant, and with proper care, it will last for generations. Unlike laminated or sprayed table tops, solid oak develops a more beautiful patina over the years — the wood lives.
Popular sizes for a rectangular oak dining table
The size largely determines how many people can fit at the table. Our most ordered sizes:
- 140 × 80 cm — For 4 people. Ideal for a small dining room or open kitchen.
- 160 × 90 cm — For 4–6 people. The most universal size.
- 180 × 90 cm — For 6 people comfortably, 8 with an extension table.
- 200 × 90 cm — For 6–8 people. Popular size for families.
- 220 × 100 cm — For 8–10 people. Spacious family table.
- 240–300 × 100–110 cm — For 10–12 people. Large table for a festive family or open-plan kitchen-diner.
Rule of thumb: allow 60 cm width per person along the long sides, and 70–80 cm for the short ends.
Finishes for oak dining tables
Solid oak can be finished in several ways:
- Oiled finish — The most natural look. The wood retains its matte character and nourishes the grain. Regular re-oiling (1–2 times a year) keeps the top in top condition.
- Soaped finish — Similar to oil, but lighter in tone. Gives an almost white patina that protects and refines the wood. Popular in Scandinavian interiors.
- Matte lacquered finish — Harder and lower maintenance. The wood still looks natural but the surface is better protected against liquid stains.
- Oiled + stained — Oak can be excellently stained in dozens of colors: from light gray to dark brown, from cognac to black. This way you give your rectangular oak table a unique color.
- Smoked oak — A chemical process where the tannic acid reaction in the wood is activated by ammonia vapor. Gives a deep brown, rich color without paint or stain.
Bases for a rectangular oak dining table
The base largely determines the style of the table:
- U-frame (rectangular steel U) — Industrial, sleek, and stable. Provides plenty of legroom at the short ends. Available in black, white, or stainless steel.
- Round or square legs — Classic option. Four legs in steel or wood, symmetrically placed. Timeless and functional.
- X-leg — Powerful appearance. An X-base in steel gives the table a robust, striking look. Popular in combination with a thick oak top.
- Wooden base (oak or walnut) — Fully wooden legs or a wooden frame gives the table a warm, organic look. Ideal if you want to avoid the industrial steel combination.
- Hairpin legs — Slender, retro steel legs for a light, mid-century look.

Frequently asked questions
How thick should a solid oak tabletop be?
The most popular thicknesses are 4 cm and 5 cm. 4 cm is stable and beautiful; 5 cm gives a more robust, heavier appearance. For large tables (>200 cm), we recommend 5 cm for extra stability.
Can I get a rectangular oak table that extends?
Yes. We supply extendable oak dining tables with a central extension leaf. This way you normally have a table of 180 cm that extends to 230 or 260 cm on occasion. Contact us for extendable custom tables.
How do I maintain an oiled oak dining table?
Wipe clean daily with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Re-oil the top 1–2 times a year with hard-wax oil or furniture oil. Avoid prolonged contact with water or aggressive cleaning agents.
Can I choose the base and top in different materials?
Absolutely. An oak top with a black steel U-frame is one of our most ordered combinations. Or an oak top with oak legs for a fully wooden table. You decide the combination.
How long does delivery of a custom rectangular oak dining table take?
On average 4–6 weeks after order confirmation and down payment. We deliver throughout the Netherlands with threshold service. On-site assembly is also possible — ask about the options.

Frequently asked questions
What is the advantage of a rectangular oak dining table?
A rectangular table utilizes space most efficiently: maximum seating capacity per running meter, clear head ends, and easy to combine with a matching dining bench. Oak adds warmth and durability.
Which oak finish suits my interior?
Light oak (natural or oiled) suits Scandinavian and Japandi interiors. Smoked oak suits industrial and darker styles. White-soaped oak suits rustic and coastal styles.
How do I maintain an oak dining table?
Oil the table 1-2 times a year with beeswax or oak wood oil. Wipe up liquids immediately. Use coasters for hot pans and placemats for daily use.
Is solid oak or oak veneer better?
Solid oak is heavier, more robust, and can be sanded if scratched. Oak veneer is lighter and cheaper but cannot be sanded. For intensive daily use, we recommend solid wood.
How long does an oak dining table last?
With normal maintenance, a solid oak table lasts 30-50 years. Oak is one of the most durable wood types for furniture.
Can I get a custom oak table?
Yes — via our 3D configurator you choose dimensions, leg shape, and finish. Custom delivery time: 6-8 weeks.
