What makes a walnut table special?

Walnut naturally has varied brown tones and visible grain. No two wooden tops are exactly alike. The finish and light in the room affect the final colour. Compare a sample in daylight and under your evening lighting when matching the table to a floor or cabinet.

Round, rectangular or organic walnut

• Round: the seats surround a single centre. Compare, for example, the round walnut dining table with a Pole base and the round version with a metal Sol base.

Which size suits your chairs?

Measure the chair width including armrests and mark the seats around the chosen top. Along a straight side, around 60–70 cm per person is an initial allowance. Wide chairs or extra elbow room may need more. Also check the position of table legs and any rails beneath the top.

Pairing a walnut table with chairs

Light upholstery can emphasise the wood colour. A dark base creates a different effect from a wooden base in the same colour family. Choose a deliberate match or contrast rather than two wood colours that differ slightly without intending it.

Caring for a walnut dining table

Follow the instructions for your tabletop's finish. Not every walnut table needs periodic oiling. Wipe up liquids promptly and use coasters. Sanding, local repairs or applying a new treatment requires advice suited to the construction and existing finish.

The woods have different markings and natural colours. Walnut is a choice for brown wood tones; oak provides a different foundation that can look lighter or darker depending on its finish. Also compare a light oak table if you are unsure about the contrast in the room.
