The wooden dining table is the heart of the dining room. It's where families gather, friends laugh, and memories are made. A solid wood table is more than furniture — it's heritage. At Industrial Home, we custom-make every wooden dining table: from the type of wood to the finish, from the legs to the dimensions. Timeless craftsmanship for the modern home.

Why a Wooden Dining Table?

In an era of mass production and disposable furniture, a solid wood dining table is a conscious choice. Wood is a living material that breathes, moves, and becomes more beautiful with time. The grain, the color, the texture — no two planks are alike. Your table will therefore be unique to you.

A solid wood dining table can last for generations. With minor repairs, periodic oiling, and normal use, a good table will remain beautiful for 50, 100 years. That is sustainability in the truest sense. Divided over its lifespan, it is also the most economical choice.

Wood Types for a Dining Table

Oak

Oak is by far the most popular wood type for dining tables in the Netherlands. It is hard (Janka hardness: approx. 5,900 N), durable, and has a timeless appearance. Natural oak has a warm cream-yellow hue. Smoked or stained oak is darker and more robust. White oiled oak is light and suits Scandinavian styles. The grain of oak is characteristic: open, lightly mottled, with so-called "medullary rays" that give a beautiful pattern.

Walnut

Walnut is the premium alternative. Its chocolate-brown color, rich grain, and warm weight make walnut a special material. A walnut dining table makes an immediate impression. It combines with white chairs for a classic contrast, but also with dark, robust materials for a maximum dramatic effect. Walnut is slightly softer than oak but sturdy enough for daily use.

Mango Wood

Mango wood is the most expressive wood type we use for dining tables. The wide planks have a pronounced grain with warm brown, yellow, and green tones. Each top is unique. Mango is sustainable (a byproduct of mango cultivation), affordable, and gives a warm, tropical character to the dining room. Perfect for those who love a distinctive, lively tabletop.

Acacia

Acacia wood is one of the hardest and most durable wood types for furniture use. The golden-brown color with a rich, wavy grain is characteristic. Acacia is moisture and scratch-resistant and suits robust, sturdy interiors. Acacia wood dining tables are often made with a live edge for a maximum organic look.

Live Edge Dining Table (Live Edge)

A live edge dining table is the ultimate statement in solid wood. The natural edge of the tree — including irregularities, voids, and bark impressions — is fully preserved. No two live edge tables are alike. Each table bears the unique signature of its tree. A live edge dining table of 2–3 meters in walnut or oak is the most impressive piece of furniture you can place in a living space.

Solid Wood vs. Veneer

There is one fundamental difference: solid wood is typically solid throughout, while veneer is a thin layer of real wood (sometimes only 0.6 mm) on a core of MDF or particle board. At Industrial Home, we work exclusively with solid wood. Here's why that matters:

  • Repairable: solid wood can still be sanded and re-finished years later. Veneer is gone after one sanding.
  • More durable: solid wood lasts decades longer.
  • More authentic: the grain runs throughout the entire wood — on the top, sides, everywhere.
  • Retains value: a solid wood table retains its value; a veneer table does not.

Finishes

The finish greatly influences the appearance and maintenance:

  • Hard oil / linseed oil: traditional, breathes well, beautifully displays the grain. Requires annual maintenance.
  • Hardwax oil: combines an oily feel with more protection. Popular for dining tables.
  • Matte lacquer: maximum protection, less periodic maintenance, slightly less "wood feel".
  • Stain + oil: for darker colors (espresso, anthracite) while preserving the grain.

Shapes of Wooden Dining Tables

At Industrial Home, every shape is possible:

  • Rectangular: the classic choice for 4–10 people. Most efficient use of table length.
  • Oval: combines the length of a rectangle with the softness of a round shape. No sharp corners, more seating per surface area.
  • Round: ideal for smaller groups (4–6 people). Encourages conversation — everyone sits equally close.
  • Organic / Live Edge: the shape follows the tree. Maximum uniqueness.

Customization for Your Space

At Industrial Home, no dimension is too big or too small. We make dining tables from 120 cm (2–4 people) to 350 cm (12–14 people). The width, height, leg style, and finish — everything is adjustable. Send us your room layout and desired number of seats, and we will advise you without obligation.

Frequently Asked Questions about Wooden Dining Tables

How do I maintain a wooden dining table?

Always use coasters for hot or wet items. Wipe up spills immediately. Oil the tabletop once a year with the recommended wood stain or oil. Avoid sharp objects directly on the wood. For scratches: light sanding with fine sandpaper (220-grit) and re-oiling will repair most of them.

Can a wooden dining table warp?

Solid wood moves with moisture and temperature — a little bit is normal. In extreme changes (e.g., next to a radiator or in a poorly ventilated room), wood can bend or crack. Good construction (breadboard ends, room jointing) and a stable indoor climate prevent problems. Our tables are constructed to accommodate climate movements.

Which type of wood is most scratch-resistant?

Acacia and oak are the hardest wood types we use. Walnut is slightly softer. With normal use, this is not a problem — just use placemats and coasters.

How quickly is a custom wooden dining table delivered?

On average 4–8 weeks, depending on the wood type, size, and complexity. Live edge tables may take slightly longer as we select a suitable plank from our assortment.

Can I submit my own design for a wooden dining table?

Absolutely. Send a sketch, a photo, or a description, and we will discuss the possibilities. This is exactly the service Industrial Home stands for.

  • Custom Wooden Dining Table — Our Method

A custom wooden dining table starts with the right type of wood. At Industrial Home, we carefully select the wood based on grain, color, and quality. Each tabletop is made of solid wood — no veneer, no engineered wood. After production, the top is sanded, milled to the desired edge (straight, chamfered, or beveled) and finished with oil or lacquer of your choice. The result is a table that lasts for generations.

    Wooden Dining Table and Sustainability

Solid wood is one of the most sustainable materials for furniture. An Industrial Home wooden dining table lasts for decades and can be re-oiled or lightly sanded with normal wear. We only work with certified wood from responsibly managed forests. Choose quality that stands the test of time, rather than cheap alternatives that wear out within years.
