Extendable Dining Table - Custom Design
Extendable Dining Table — Compact for Daily Use, Spacious for Guests
An extendable dining table is the perfect companion for those who want to live stylishly without compromising on hospitality. Compact and tidy every day, and when guests arrive, you can transform it into a spacious feast in no time. At Industrial Home, you can custom-configure your extendable dining table — or submit your own design. It perfectly matches the current Japandi, wabi-sabi, and slow living trends dominating today's Dutch interiors.
Extendable Dining Table: Synonym for Smart Living
The term verlengbare eettafel (extendable dining table) is often used interchangeably with uitschuifbare eettafel (sliding dining table) in the Netherlands. They mean the same thing: a dining table that can be made larger when needed. However, there is a subtle difference in perception. "Verlengbaar" emphasizes extending for guests — the hospitality component. And that is precisely where these tables excel.
Imagine: Sunday afternoon, the whole family at the table. Grandma and Grandpa, the children with their partners, the neighbor who also joins for dinner. An extendable dining table makes this possible without needing to store a second table in the utility room. Extended, it offers space for the entire company; the next day, you slide it back in, and it fits perfectly into your dining room.

Flexible Living with an Extendable Dining Table
Modern living demands furniture that adapts to your needs. Apartments are getting smaller, but living desires are growing. An extendable dining table is the answer to this paradox. It fits perfectly in an open-plan living room where the dining room and living room merge — compact when it's quiet, large when it's lively.
Extendable dining tables are also popular in kitchens with a dining area. A table of 120 or 140 cm is perfectly manageable in the kitchen; extended to 180 or 200 cm, you become a completely hospitable host or hostess from the kitchen.
Materials for Your Extendable Dining Table
The choice of material determines the atmosphere, maintenance, and lifespan of your extendable dining table. We offer:
Solid oak — warm and timeless
Oak has been the favorite wood for dining furniture for centuries. It is hard, durable, and wears beautifully. An oak extendable dining table becomes more beautiful with age. Choose from natural oiled, white stained, or natural oak for different atmospheres in your interior.
Ceramic — easy to maintain and modern
Ceramic tabletops are incredibly popular. Heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, stain-resistant. A ceramic extendable dining table is ideal for families or for people who have little time for maintenance. Available in marble-look, dark slate, concrete gray, and more.
HPL — durable composite
HPL (High Pressure Laminate) is a composite material that looks like wood or concrete but is much more robust. The best of both worlds: beautiful design and super practical to use.
Walnut — exclusive and warm
Walnut has a deeper, darker tone than oak. Perfect for those who want to create a luxurious dining room. Combines excellently with dark furniture colors and leather chairs.

How to Choose the Right Extendable Dining Table?
When choosing an extendable dining table, three questions are crucial:
1. How many people usually sit at the table? Base the standard size on this. 4 people daily? Choose a 140 cm table. 6 people daily? Go for 160 cm.
2. How many guests do you want to be able to host at most? Calculate how much the table needs to extend. Allow roughly 60–65 cm width per person on the long side.
3. How much space is there in the dining room? Allow at least 80–90 cm of free space around the table for comfortable movement and pushing back chairs.

Buying guide: choosing the right dining table
| Number of people | Minimum length | Recommended length |
|---|---|---|
| 4 people | 140 cm | 160 cm |
| 6 people | 180 cm | 200 cm |
| 8 people | 220 cm | 240 cm |
| 10 people | 260 cm | 280-300 cm |
- Space around the table: allow at least 90 cm of free walking space on all sides — 75 cm is the absolute minimum.
- Standard table height: 75-78 cm. Combine with chairs that have a seat height of 43-47 cm.
- Width: a minimum of 80 cm for comfortable seating opposite each other, 90-100 cm is ideal.
- Per person: allow 60-70 cm of table length per person — 70 cm provides elbow room.
How does an extendable dining table work?+
Most extendable dining tables have an insertable extension leaf that is located in the middle or at one end of the table. You pull the table tops apart, place the extension leaf, and slide them back together. With our models, this can be operated smoothly and with one hand.
How much extra length does an extension leaf provide?+
Depending on the model: most extension leaves at Industrial Home add 40-60 cm. A 160 cm table thus becomes 200-220 cm — enough for 2-4 extra guests.
Is an extendable table less sturdy than a fixed table?+
With good quality, the difference is minimal. Our extendable tables have a reinforced sliding mechanism and feel just as solid in the extended position as in the base position. Avoid cheap sliding mechanisms — they will quickly become wobbly.
Is the seam visible when the table is not extended?+
With good quality tables, the seam is barely visible in the base position. With us, the tops align neatly in the regular position. However, there is always a subtle line — this is inherent to the design.
What materials are available for extendable dining tables?+
Oak (solid or veneer), HPL (scratch-resistant, also as an extension leaf), ceramic (the extension leaf is made of the same ceramic top — no visible difference in color or texture), and Fenix.
How large should the dining room be for an extendable table?+
Calculate the maximum extended length + 80-90 cm on all sides for chairs and walking space. A table of 160-220 cm in its extended position requires a room of at least 400 cm in length for a comfortable setup.
