Buying a Walnut Dining Table — Everything You Need to Know

Buying a walnut dining table is an investment that will bring you joy for decades. Walnut (Juglans regia or Juglans nigra) is one of the most beautiful and prized wood species for furniture: dark, warm, with a rich grain and unmistakable character. But before you buy, it's important to know what to look for. In this guide, we'll cover everything: solid vs. veneer, finish, base, price range, and how to find your ideal walnut dining table at Industrial Home.

Solid Walnut vs. Walnut Veneer

This is the first and most important choice when buying a walnut dining table:

Solid Walnut

A solid walnut tabletop is made entirely of solid wood — no particleboard or fiberboard underneath, just wood from top to bottom. Advantages:

  • Authentic, unique due to its wood grain
  • Can be sanded and refinished if scratched or stained
  • With proper care, it can last for generations
  • Heavier and sturdier feel
  • Higher value — even as antique furniture

Disadvantage: solid wood can expand and contract with significant changes in temperature and humidity. Good finishing and a stable environment minimize this.

Walnut Veneer

A veneer tabletop has a core of MDF or plywood, on which a thin layer of walnut wood is glued. Advantages: cheaper, less sensitive to movement. Disadvantages: cannot be re-sanded, less authentic, shorter lifespan. At Industrial Home, we work exclusively with solid wood — no veneer.

What to look for when buying?

Finish

The finish determines the appearance and maintenance:

  • Oiled finish — Most natural. Protects the wood but allows it to breathe. Re-oil 1–2 times a year.
  • Matte lacquered — Harder surface, less maintenance. Wood still looks natural but stains are easier to wipe away.
  • High-gloss lacquer — Shiny and sleek. Less popular for walnut because the beautiful grain is less visible.

Base

The base largely determines the style. Popular combinations with walnut:

  • Walnut top + black steel — Modern industrial, powerful contrast
  • Walnut top + walnut legs — All wood, warm and organic
  • Walnut top + stainless steel legs — Modern, luxurious look
  • Walnut top + hairpin legs — Retro, light and playful

Table Thickness

Walnut tops with a thickness of 4–5 cm give the most impressive appearance. Thinner (2.5–3 cm) is also possible and gives a lighter feel. For a robust dining table for daily use, we recommend 4 cm.

Price Range — What does a walnut dining table cost?

Walnut is a more expensive wood species than oak or spruce. A custom-made walnut dining table at Industrial Home costs:

  • Small table (140–160 cm) — From approximately €1,800
  • Medium-sized table (180–200 cm) — €2,200 – €3,200
  • Large table (220–260 cm) — €3,200 – €5,000+

The price varies depending on the thickness of the top, the base, and any additional options such as bevelled edges, live edge, or an extension mechanism. Use our configurator for an immediate price calculation for your specific wishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is walnut harder than oak?

No — oak is slightly harder (Janka 5.9 kN vs. walnut 4.5 kN). Both are excellent for a dining table. Walnut is more valued for its aesthetic properties (color, grain) than for its hardness.

Can I also buy a walnut dining table in a live-edge version?

Yes. A live edge walnut table — with the natural tree edge on one or both sides — is one of our most requested products. Each top is unique. Prices on request.

How do I maintain a walnut dining table?

Wipe clean daily with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Oil the top 1–2 times a year with a suitable hard-wax oil or walnut oil. Avoid prolonged contact with hot water or aggressive cleaning agents.

Is there a showroom where I can view walnut tables?

Yes, our showroom can be visited by appointment. You will see real tops, material samples, and finished models. Contact us via the website to schedule a visit.

Can I also submit a design for my walnut dining table?

Absolutely. That is precisely our strength. Send us your sketch, photo, or design, and we will discuss the possibilities. Fully custom-made, no extra charge for your own design.

Frequently asked questions

What should I look for when buying a walnut dining table?

Check: solid walnut or walnut veneer? Oiled or lacquered finish? Wood origin (FSC)? Leg material? Delivery time? Solid walnut is more expensive but more durable and repairable.

What is a fair price for a walnut dining table?

Solid walnut 180 cm: €1,400-€2,800. Walnut veneer: €600-€1,400. Price difference: walnut grows slowly and is scarce — good walnut costs more than oak.

What is the difference between American and European walnut?

American walnut (Juglans nigra) is darker and has a more dramatic grain. European walnut (Juglans regia) is lighter in color and has a finer grain. We primarily work with American walnut.

How do I recognize quality walnut?

Real solid walnut has a grain that continues along the side of the top. Veneer has a horizontal edge. Solid walnut is also heavier. Always ask for the certificate of origin.

Can a walnut table be combined with light chairs?

Yes — light oak or ash chairs contrast beautifully with the dark walnut. White or light upholstered chairs create an elegant balance.

Is walnut more maintenance-intensive than oak?

Slightly — walnut is a bit softer (Janka 1010 vs 1290 for oak) and can scratch more easily with intensive use. Use placemats and oil regularly for protection.
