Buy a Solid Oak Dining Table - Custom-Made & Durable
Solid Oak Dining Table — Custom Design
A solid oak dining table is the best furniture investment you can make. Solid oak is more durable than almost any other material, more repairable than almost any other surface, and more beautiful than anything a factory can mimic. At Industrial Home, we make solid oak dining tables completely custom — in your size, your finish, your base shape. Not a catalog with limited choices, but a table made precisely for you.
Solid vs. Veneer: The Fundamental Difference
The terms "oak dining table" and "solid oak dining table" are sometimes used interchangeably in the market, but the difference is fundamental and worth understanding:
Solid Oak
Solid oak means that the tabletop, legs, and other components consist of solid, full oak wood — through and through. Every millimeter of a 4 cm thick solid oak top is oak wood. The grain you see on top extends to the bottom. If you want to sand and re-oil the table in ten years, there's enough material. If there's a scratch, it disappears with sanding. Solid oak lasts for generations — a well-maintained solid oak dining table can be 50, 100 years old without losing its quality.
Veneer
An oak veneer table has a core of MDF (medium-density fiberboard), particle board, or plywood, covered with a thin layer of oak wood (usually 0.5–2 mm thick). The top layer looks the same as solid oak, but the table is fundamentally different:
- Veneer can only be sanded once or twice before the oak layer is gone — after that, the table is irreparable.
- Veneer is more sensitive to moisture: prolonged contact can cause it to peel or bubble.
- The sides of a veneer top are visibly not solid — a different type of wood or ABS edge is applied, revealing the difference.
- Veneer has a shorter lifespan than solid wood.
Veneer is not inherently bad — for cabinets and shelves, veneer can be perfectly fine. But for a dining table that is used intensively daily, lasts for decades, and represents an investment, solid oak is the only real choice.
Buying a Solid Oak Dining Table — What Does It Cost?
A fair question deserves a fair answer. A solid oak dining table at Industrial Home typically costs between €800 and €3,500 or more, depending on three factors: size, finish, and base.
- Small table (140–160 cm): approximately €800–€1,200. Suitable for a compact dining room or 4–6 people. This is the most accessible entry point for buying a true solid oak table.
- Medium size (180 cm): approximately €1,200–€1,800. The most popular size for families — comfortable for 6–8 people.
- Large table (200–220 cm): approximately €1,800–€2,800. Generous, impressive, ideal for large families or those who enjoy entertaining guests.
- Large table (240 cm and larger): from €2,500–€3,500+. For dining rooms that deserve a statement — up to 10–12 people.
All prices include free delivery and installation in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. It is also an investment that pays off: a solid oak dining table retains its value and lasts for decades. Always request a custom quote — the solid oak dining table price depends heavily on your specific wishes.
Solid Oak Dining Table by Size
Every solid oak dining table at Industrial Home is custom-made. Below you will find a guide per table length — the most requested sizes and what you can expect per size:
Solid Oak Dining Table 160 cm
A solid oak dining table 160 cm is the entry-level size for families and couples with dining table ambitions. Comfortable for 4 to 6 people. Works particularly well in smaller dining rooms or open living rooms where you don't want to sacrifice too much space. The 160 cm version is also popular as a kitchen table. Width is standard 80–90 cm but fully customizable.
Solid Oak Dining Table 180 cm
The solid oak dining table 180 cm is by far the most requested size. Suitable for 6 to 8 people. Spacious enough for a Sunday family dinner, compact enough not to dominate in the average Dutch dining room. This is the sweet spot in terms of size and price. The 180 cm solid oak dining table combines well with almost any interior — from Scandinavian to industrial.
Solid Oak Dining Table 200 cm
A solid oak dining table 200 cm is the choice if you want generous seating. 8 people can sit comfortably, and with an extension or narrow chairs, even 10. This size makes a statement in the dining room — it's a piece of furniture that attracts attention. Ensure at least 80–100 cm of clear space around the table for comfortable passage.
Solid Oak Dining Table 240 cm
A solid oak dining table 240 cm is for those who think truly big. Families of 8–10 people, guests for the holidays, or simply a dining room with the allure of a mansion. A table of this size requires a spacious dining room (at least 350–400 cm in length) and a sturdy base. At Industrial Home, we also deliver these custom sizes in solid oak.
Styles: Scandinavian, Industrial, and Wabi-Sabi
The solid oak tabletop is neutral enough to fit any interior — but the base sets the tone. The three most popular styles:
Scandinavian
Solid oak slanted legs, natural or white oiled top, light shades. This is the classic Scandinavian combination: warm, timeless, organic. The slanted legs give the table a light and playful feel. Combines perfectly with Eames chairs, light leather upholstery, or linen chairs. If you Google "Scandinavian interior," you will almost always see a solid oak table with slanted legs.
Industrial
Matte black U-frame or X-frame base, smoked or dark stained oak top. This is the tough, characteristic combination. The contrast between the warm oak and the cool steel gives the table tension. Combines well with industrial pendant lamps, concrete floors, and leather chairs. For those who love an interior with character and a slight edge.
Wabi-Sabi
A central solid oak beam or butterfly legs, natural oiled top with visible grains and irregularities, rough finish. Wabi-sabi is about the beauty of imperfection — and solid oak is the ideal material for this. Knots, color variations, and open grains are celebrated here rather than hidden. Combines with earthy tones, linen, and terracotta in the interior.
Finishes for Solid Oak
Natural Oiled
The most authentic finish. The oak retains its warm, cream-yellow color. The oil penetrates the wood, accentuating the grain and protecting the top from within. No film layer on the surface — the wood feels "real." Requires annual re-treatment with oak oil. Provides the most vibrant, breathable table.
White Oiled
White oiled oak has a lighter, cooler tone. The white oil subtly bleaches the wood to an off-white wood appearance popular in Scandinavian and Japandi interiors. Maintenance similar to natural oiled.
Hardwax Oil
Hardwax oil provides more protection than standard oak oil. The surface is more robust and less sensitive to liquids. Ideal for households with children or for tables that are used intensively. Slightly less "open" in feel than natural oiled but substantially more practical.
Matte Lacquer
A layer of matte lacquer over the oak provides a stronger protective layer. The grain is still visible, but the top is less sensitive to liquids. Disadvantage: in case of damage, re-lacquering is necessary (unlike oiled, which can be repaired locally).
Smoked Oak
Smoked oak is oak that has been treated in an ammonia vapor chamber. The ammonia reacts with the tannins in the oak, coloring the wood dark from within — a warm, tobacco-brown color that cannot be achieved with stain or paint. Smoked oak is deep, rich in color, and has a timeless, luxurious appearance.
Bases
- Solid oak slanted legs: warm, Scandinavian, timeless.
- Matte black U-frame: industrial modern, sleek.
- Oak central beam: solid, wabi-sabi, monumental.
- Combination wood + steel: the best of both worlds.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if a dining table is truly solid oak?
Look at the side of the top: with solid oak, the grain runs through the side. With veneer, you will see an edge or a different wood. Solid oak is also significantly heavier than MDF or particle board. Always explicitly ask for "solid" when buying a table.
Is solid oak suitable for daily use by a family?
Yes — solid oak is robust enough for daily intensive use. Use hardwax oil or matte lacquer for extra protection. Wipe away stains immediately. A well-oiled or lacquered solid oak table will easily withstand years of family table use.
Can I have a solid oak table made extendable?
Yes. An extendable solid oak dining table is fully achievable. The extension mechanism is integrated into the base, and the extra leaves are made of the same solid oak. Contact us for the possibilities.
How do I maintain a solid oak dining table?
Oiled oak: annual treatment with oak oil, wipe away stains immediately, use placemats for wet glasses and hot pans. Lacquered oak: wipe with a damp cloth, re-lacquer if damaged. For scratches in oiled oak: sand with 220-grit along the grain, re-oil.
