An HPL dining table is the smartest choice for those who want to combine maximum durability and minimal maintenance with a modern, stylish look. HPL (High Pressure Laminate) is an extremely robust surface material that is scratch-resistant, moisture-resistant, and heat-resistant — and it is available in over a thousand colours, decors, and textures. At Industrial Home, we make HPL dining tables completely custom-made, in any desired size and colour.

What is HPL?

High Pressure Laminate is a composite material consisting of multiple layers of kraft paper (kraft paper impregnated with phenol resin) with a top layer of decorative paper, compressed under extreme pressure (more than 70 bar) and high temperature (more than 150°C). The result is an extremely hard, dense, and durable surface material that goes far beyond ordinary laminate.

HPL is not the same as cheap furniture laminate or foil. It is a stable, high-end industrial material that is also used in kitchens, laboratories, hospitals, and aircraft interiors due to its extreme durability.

Advantages of HPL for a Dining Table

Extremely Scratch-Resistant

HPL scores high on the Brinell hardness test — significantly higher than varnished wood or painted MDF. Cutlery, keys, children's toys, sharp edges — HPL can withstand it all. This makes HPL ideal for families with children or for dining tables that are used intensively.

Stain-Resistant

The closed, non-porous surface of HPL does not absorb liquids. Wine, coffee, sauce — wipe it away with a damp cloth. HPL is resistant to most household liquids and food stains. This is in stark contrast to solid wood, which can indeed stain with prolonged moist contact.

Heat-Resistant

HPL can withstand heat up to approximately 150°C with direct contact. A warm pan or plate is not a problem. However, it is always advisable to be careful — use a coaster if in doubt.

More than 1000 Colours and Decors

This is perhaps the biggest advantage of HPL: the freedom of choice. The material is available in almost every conceivable colour (RAL colours, trendy interior shades), but also in decors that imitate other materials:

  • Wood decors: oak look, walnut look, bamboo look — the structure of wood recreated in HPL. From a meter away, hardly distinguishable from real wood.
  • Concrete look: steel grey, rough concrete, light concrete — the industrial aesthetic of concrete without the weight.
  • Solid colour matt: matt black, matt white, matt grey, matt green — sleek solid colours in a matt finish.
  • Marble look: white marble, Carrara look, Calacatta — luxurious marble appearance without the maintenance problems of real marble.

HPL vs. Fenix: Which Do You Choose?

HPL and Fenix are often compared. Here are the concrete differences:

  • Mattness: Fenix is deeper matt than standard HPL. Fenix absorbs more light and has a subtle, velvety softer feel.
  • Thermal scratch recovery: only Fenix has this property. With HPL, scratches are permanent, but the material scratches less easily.
  • Colour choice: HPL wins here — the complete range of HPL is broader than Fenix, with more wood decors and concrete looks.
  • Price: HPL is cheaper than Fenix, making it more accessible to a wider audience.
  • Durability in use: HPL is practically harder and more scratch-resistant than Fenix in daily reality.

The choice: if you want the deepest mattness and thermal recovery → choose Fenix. If you want the widest colour choice, extreme scratch resistance, and the best price-quality ratio → choose HPL.

Shapes and Sizes

HPL dining tables at Industrial Home are available in any shape:

  • Rectangular: the most common shape. Efficient use of the top, maximum seating per square metre.
  • Round: a round HPL top is technically more challenging to produce (the edges require more processing) but the result is beautiful.
  • Oval: combination of rectangular and round — elegant and practical.

Sizes on request — no standard sizes at Industrial Home. Please provide the exact dimensions you want.

Bases for HPL Dining Tables

The base combines with the HPL top to determine the character of the table:

  • Oak wooden legs: adds warmth to a sleek HPL top. The most popular combination.
  • Matt black steel frame: for a completely modern or industrial look.
  • Walnut wooden legs: luxurious, warm, premium appearance.
  • Brass coloured steel: luxurious accent, perfect with a white or beige HPL top.

Frequently Asked Questions about HPL Dining Tables

Is HPL the same as Formica?

Formica is a brand of HPL — like Kleenex for tissues. Formica makes HPL, but HPL is the generic category under which dozens of brands fall (Formica, Trespa, Fundermax, etc.). Quality differences between brands exist but are generally small for furniture use.

Can an HPL dining table be used outdoors?

Standard HPL is an indoor material. There is "exterior-grade" HPL that is specially treated for outdoor use — this is a separate product group. Our dining tables are for indoor use.

How do I maintain an HPL dining table?

Extremely simple: wipe with a damp cloth. For stubborn stains: mild dish soap on a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or aggressive cleaning products — these can damage the top layer. HPL does not require oils, varnishes, or periodic treatment.

Does HPL yellow in light?

Quality HPL is lightfast and yellows minimally with normal indoor use. Cheap, low-quality HPL can discolour faster. At Industrial Home, we only use HPL from reputable manufacturers with proven lightfastness.

Can I have my HPL dining table repaired if it has a deep scratch?

HPL is not thermally repairable like Fenix. Shallow scratches can sometimes be concealed with furniture wax in the correct colour. Deep scratches or damage are practically irreparable — the top would have to be replaced. This is rarely necessary with normal use.
