Round or rectangular dining table — which one best suits your dining room?

When furnishing a dining room, sooner or later you face a classic question: do you choose a round or a rectangular dining table? Both shapes have their own charm, practical advantages and disadvantages. The right choice depends on your space, your lifestyle, and your personal taste. In this article, we'll list everything so you can make an informed decision.

The round dining table: warm, cozy, and space-saving

A round table has something inherently cozy about it. Without corners, all guests sit equally at the table — no one sits 'at the head'. This makes a round table particularly suitable for intimate meals and cozy dinners where conversation is key.

Advantages of a round table

  • Social dynamic: Everyone sits facing everyone. No hierarchy, more eye contact, cozier atmosphere.
  • Space-saving in small rooms: A round table takes up less space in the corners, keeping walkways clear.
  • Child-friendly: No sharp corners — preferable if you have young children.
  • Visually softer: The round shape makes a room feel less angular and rigid.

The rectangular dining table: versatile, practical, and scalable

The rectangular table is by far the most chosen shape — and for good reason. It fits in almost any space, effortlessly scales with the number of guests, and is available in extendable versions.

Advantages of a rectangular table

  • Scalable: From 4 to 12 people — with an extension leaf, the table grows with you.
  • Fits in narrow spaces: In a long dining room or open kitchen, a rectangular table fits much more efficiently.
  • Sleek appearance: The straight lines fit perfectly with modern, industrial, or minimalist interiors.
  • More table surface area per m²: You make optimal use of the available space.
Feature Round Rectangular
Atmosphere Cozy, intimate Sleek, formal
Capacity Limited scalability Good scalability
Space Usage Compact in small rooms Efficient in elongated rooms
Extendable Rarely Often available
Child Safety Better (no corners) Sharp corners
Style Organic, classic Modern, industrial

The organic intermediate form: oval and barrel-shaped tables

Can't decide between round and rectangular? Then an oval or barrel-shaped table is an excellent compromise. This shape combines the soft look of a round table with the capacity and elongated shape of a rectangular table. An oval table fits well in an elongated dining room and gives the space an organic, inviting atmosphere.
Oval tables are also practical: the rounded ends provide better clearance at the short sides. They are less common than round or rectangular tables, but therefore also a unique choice that immediately distinguishes your interior.
Size advice: what dimensions fit your space?
Regardless of the shape, the following applies: measure your space carefully and maintain at least 80 cm of walking space around the table. For a round table, this means:

  • 4 persons: ø 110–120 cm — space needed: at least approx. 3.5 × 3.5 m
  • 6 persons: ø 140–160 cm — space needed: at least approx. 4 × 4 m

For a rectangular table:

  • 4 persons: 160 × 80 cm — room: at least approx. 3.8 × 3.2 m
  • 6 persons: 180–200 × 90 cm — room: at least approx. 4 × 3.2 m
  • 8 persons: 220–240 × 100 cm — room: at least approx. 4.5 × 3.5 m

Practical tip: sketch your space on paper

Draw your dining room to scale on paper (or use a free app like RoomSketcher). Place the table to scale in the room and draw the walking space around it. This way, you'll immediately see whether a round or rectangular table fits better — and which size makes the most sense.

Our recommendation
Do you have a small, square dining room and do you dine with a maximum of 4–6 people? Then choose a round table. Do you have an elongated space, an open kitchen, or do you want flexibility for more guests? Then go for a rectangular table. And do you want the best of both worlds? Then consider an oval model.
