Which dining table suits an open-plan kitchen? Tips and inspiration
Written by Erik Tobben — Founder & Furniture Expert, Industrial Home
An open-plan kitchen gives your home a spacious, modern feel. However, precisely because the kitchen and dining room merge into one space, this places high demands on the choice of your dining table. After all, the table is always in view — from the kitchen, from the living room, and for everyone who enters. In this article, you will read what to consider when choosing a dining table for an open-plan kitchen, and how to perfectly match style, material, and size.
Why table choice is extra important in an open-plan kitchen
Rectangular
Oval
Round
In a traditional layout with a separate dining room, the dining table is more or less self-contained. In an open-plan kitchen, this is different: the table is visually connected to the kitchen island, cabinets, countertop, and even the appliances. A mismatch in style or material is immediately noticeable.
Moreover, in an open kitchen, the table often functions as an extension of the kitchen island. It is used for breakfast, coffee, working from home, and dinner. This places extra demands on durability and ease of maintenance. A good choice ensures visual cohesion and practical comfort.
Matching the style to your kitchen
Round
Oval
Rectangular
The first step is to determine the style direction. Do you have a modern, sleek kitchen with grey or white cabinets and a concrete-look countertop? Then a table with a sleek frame in matte steel or black powder-coated steel will fit perfectly. Or have you opted for a warm, country-style kitchen with wooden fronts and a marble-look top? Then a solid oak or walnut table is a beautiful choice that enhances the warmth.
Also pay attention to the color of your floor. A light oak floor requires a table that doesn't blend in too much but also doesn't clash. A dark floor, on the other hand, allows for a lighter tabletop. At Industrial Home, you can combine tabletop and base completely to your liking, so that the table seamlessly matches your interior.
Materials: ceramic, HPL, or solid oak?
The choice of tabletop material is crucial, especially in an open-plan kitchen where odors, splashes, and intensive use are the norm.
Ceramic
A ceramic tabletop is extremely practical. It is completely heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, and easy to clean. You can place a hot pan on it, and stains from coffee, wine, or sauce disappear with a damp cloth. Ceramic also has a high-quality appearance and is available in countless colors and patterns — from concrete to marble look. Ideal for a busy open-plan kitchen.
HPL (High Pressure Laminate)
HPL is a compressed laminate that is extremely durable. It is less susceptible to scratches than wood and easier to maintain. At the same time, HPL today looks surprisingly natural — available in wood decors that are almost indistinguishable from real wood. An excellent choice if you want the look of wood with the practical advantages of a harder surface.
Solid oak
Solid oak has a warmth and character that no other material can match. Each table is unique due to its natural grain. Oak gets more beautiful with age, although it does require a little more maintenance: regular oiling and protection against prolonged moisture. In combination with an industrial steel frame, an oak tabletop is a timeless choice for the open-plan kitchen.
| Material | Maintenance | Heat Resistant | Appearance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ceramic | Minimal | ✓ Yes | Modern, luxurious |
| HPL | Low | ✓ Yes (limited) | Natural, versatile |
| Solid oak | Regular oiling | ✗ Limited | Warm, unique |
Size advice: how big should your table be?
In an open-plan kitchen, the space around the table is just as important as the table itself. Allow at least 80 cm of walking space around the table — this way you can comfortably walk past the chairs, even when people are seated. For the tabletop itself: allow approximately 60 cm width and 40 cm depth per person at the table.
Practical rule of thumb:
- 4 people: minimum 160 × 80 cm
- 6 people: minimum 180–200 × 90 cm
- 8 people: minimum 220–240 × 100 cm
Measure your space carefully before ordering. Take into account the position of the kitchen island and the passages to the rest of the house.
Extendable dining tables: flexibility for every occasion
Do you regularly entertain guests, but don't always want to have a large table? Then an extendable dining table is an excellent solution. With an insert leaf, you can easily extend the table for family dinners or holidays, and then shorten it again for daily use.
Extendable tables are available in almost all materials and styles. At Industrial Home, you can also order custom extendable tables — with the exact dimensions that suit your open-plan kitchen. This way, you always have the right table, for every occasion.
Color and contrast: complete the space
An open-plan kitchen calls for conscious color choices. The table does not have to be the exact same color as your kitchen fronts — a slight contrast can give the space more depth and character. Consider a dark walnut top in a kitchen with light cabinets, or a light grey ceramic top in combination with dark green fronts.
The table frame also plays a role. A black steel frame gives an industrial, robust look. A brushed stainless steel frame fits better with a modern, minimalist kitchen. At Industrial Home, you choose the combination of top and frame yourself — via our 3D configurator you can see the result directly on your screen.
Tips for a cohesive look
- Repeat materials: use the same wood in the tabletop and kitchen fronts for a smooth transition.
- Choose bar stools or dining chairs that match the style of your kitchen.
- A pendant lamp above the table visually marks the dining area and creates coziness.
- Choose a tabletop that matches the color of your countertop but doesn't blend in with it.
At Industrial Home, you design your dining table completely custom: choose your size, tabletop, frame, and finish — and view the result directly in 3D.
