Which table size for how many people?
Written by Erik Tobben — Founder & Furniture Expert, Industrial Home
One of the most frequently asked questions when choosing a dining table: what size do I actually need? Too small and your guests will be cramped, too large and your table will dominate the room. In this article, we give you a clear overview – this is how you choose the right table size for your situation.
The basic rule: how much space per person?
Allow a minimum of 60 cm width per person on the long side of a rectangular table. If you want truly comfortable seating with elbow room, aim for 70-75 cm per person. The short ends usually seat 1 person per side.
Rectangular dining table: sizes per number of people
| Number of people | Minimum length | Comfortable length |
|---|---|---|
| 4 people | 140 cm | 160 cm |
| 6 people | 160 cm | 180-200 cm |
| 8 people | 200 cm | 220-240 cm |
| 10 people | 240 cm | 260-280 cm |
| 12 people | 280 cm | 300 cm |
Round dining table: sizes per number of people
For round tables, a different calculation applies. Advantage: everyone sits equally, which is good for conversation.
| Number of people | Diameter |
|---|---|
| 4 people | 100-110 cm |
| 6 people | 130-140 cm |
| 8 people | 150-160 cm |
Note: round tables larger than 160 cm quickly become impractical – conversation across the table then becomes difficult.
Don't forget the space around the table
The table size is one thing – the space you need in your room is just as important. Consider:
- Minimum 80 cm space behind each chair (to stand up comfortably)
- 100-120 cm if people also need to be able to walk behind the chairs
So for a table of 200 x 90 cm, you ideally need a room of at least 360 x 250 cm.
Width of the table
The width is often overlooked, but it's just as important:
- 80 cm wide — minimum for 2 people opposite each other, little room for serving dishes
- 90 cm wide — standard and comfortable
- 100 cm wide — luxurious feel, plenty of space for plates, glasses, and serving dishes in the middle of the table
- 120 cm wide — for wide statement tables, adds extra grandeur
Practical example
You live with 4 people but also want to host a family dinner for 10 people twice a year. Then an extendable table from 180 → 260 cm is the ideal choice. Compact and manageable for daily use, with space for everyone on holidays.
Conclusion
The rule of thumb is simple: allow 60-70 cm per person on the long side, don't forget the space around the table, and consider an extendable table if you occasionally host more guests than average.
