Dining table with extension: when to use it, when not?
Written by Erik Tobben — Founder & Furniture Expert, Industrial Home
A dining table with an extension — also known as an extendable table or a table with an insert leaf — sounds ideal. More flexibility, more seating when you need it. But is it always the best choice? In this article, we'll help you decide when an extension genuinely adds value, and when you're better off without one.
When is an extendable dining table a smart choice?
1. You regularly host guests
Do you have a large family or frequently organize dinners, birthday parties, or family gatherings? Then an extension is practically indispensable. Your table fits into your dining room daily, but for large occasions, you can extend it to 240, 260, or even 300 cm.
2. Your living room isn't big enough for a fixed large table
In many Dutch homes, the dining room isn't enormous. A fixed table of 240 cm simply won't fit. A table that normally measures 160 or 180 cm and extends to 220 or 240 cm offers the perfect solution: comfortable daily use, with room for holidays.
3. Your family is still growing
Small children take up little space now, but that changes quickly. An extendable table grows with your family without needing to buy a new table.
When can you skip the extension?
1. You rarely host extra guests
If your table is rarely or never extended, an extension mechanism is superfluous. You're paying for functionality you won't use. In that case, choose a fixed table — it's often sturdier, has a cleaner line, and is cheaper.
2. You want a specific material or shape
Ceramic tables, solid oak tops, or organic shapes are rarely available with an extension. Do you absolutely want that beautiful ceramic top or that round wooden table? Then you'll opt for fixed dimensions.
3. Maximum stability and simplicity
A table without a mechanism is simply more stable. No moving parts, no gaps between the leaves, no risk of the extension mechanism becoming less smooth after years.
What are popular sizes for extendable tables?
- 160 → 220 cm — ideal for 6 to 8 people
- 180 → 240 cm — comfortable for 8 to 10 people
- 200 → 260 cm — suitable for large families and regular dinners
Which extension system is the best?
There are two commonly used systems:
- Butterfly system: The insert leaf is hidden under the tabletop and automatically folds up when you extend the table. Convenient, but limited in extra length.
- Loose insert leaf: You extend the table and place a separate leaf in it. More flexibility in size, but you need somewhere to store the insert leaf.
Conclusion
An extendable dining table is ideal if you regularly host guests or live in a smaller space but still want flexibility. If you rarely host guests, or want a specific material or design? Then opt for a fixed table — you'll have more freedom in material, shape, and finish.
At Industrial Home, you can configure both options: fixed tables in solid oak, ceramic, HPL, or Fenix, or custom-made extendable tables. View our full range or use our 3D configurator to assemble your ideal table.
