Dining table with chairs: choose a combination that fits
Choose a dining table with chairs as a whole: the chairs should be comfortable, fit under the table and leave enough room to move in and out. Start with the number of everyday seats, measure your room, then compare shapes, materials and upholstery.

A table with 4, 6 or 8 chairs
The number of chairs does not depend only on table length. Four chairs measuring 60 cm wide already take up 240 cm along one side, without gaps. A 200 cm table therefore cannot comfortably accommodate four such chairs side by side there.

Every layout needs enough clear space along the edge and beneath the top. For oval and organic tables, also allow for the narrowing ends.
The four measurements to check together
- Chair width: measure including armrests and leave gaps between chairs.
- Seat height: compare the seat with the table height and test the sitting posture.
- Armrest height: measure to the highest point of the armrest and compare with the clear height beneath the top, including rails or edges.
- Clear space between the legs: the tabletop may be wide enough while the base blocks a chair.
A gap of around 25–30 cm between the seat and the top of the tabletop is an initial guideline, not proof that the combination fits. A thick top reduces legroom. Test with the chosen chair if possible.
Matching shapes and materials
You can pair a round Japandi dining table with calm fabrics and wooden details. Light upholstery can contrast with a walnut table. A ceramic marble-look table combines differently with an upholstered chair than with a wooden seat.
First choose one connecting element, such as the base colour. Compare upholstery in the light of your own room. Available fabrics, colours, armrests and bases vary by chair model.
Castors, swivel or a fixed chair?
Castors can make moving in easier, but must suit your floor. A swivel chair needs clear space beside the table. A fixed chair must be able to move far enough backwards. Always check the product options and how they work in the complete dining area.
