How long should a table for 10 people be?

At a rectangular table, four people often sit along each long side and one at each end. Allow for your chair widths at each seat and leave space between armrests. Rectangular, oval or organic?

Width, base and legroom

Besides length, width matters for tableware and space in the centre of the table. Also check where the legs or base sit: a central base can free up space along the edge, while corner legs create a different layout. Measure with the chair width including armrests.

Measure the entire dining room

Mark the table on the floor and put chairs in position. Then check whether chairs can move backwards, whether you can walk past the table and whether doors and cupboards remain usable. This shows whether a large fixed table fits or another shape works better.

Worked example: 4 + 4 + 2 seats

With four people along each long side and one at each end, you have ten seats. Four 60 cm wide chairs use 240 cm together, before adding gaps. A 280 cm top gives more flexibility, but end seats and table legs can reduce that space. Mark out the complete layout using your chair widths.

Would you like five people along both long sides and no one at the ends? The combined width of five 60 cm chairs alone is already 300 cm. Gaps and leg positions may require a larger size. This layout therefore needs a different table from an arrangement with end seats.

A 10-person dining table for everyday use or visitors?

If you use ten seats every day, check a fixed table against the full room layout. If you usually need fewer seats, an extendable rectangular oak dining table may be an alternative. The available extension varies by version. Measure the table in both positions and check whether its extended size actually fits ten of your chairs.
