Dining table with bench: size, seating and layout

A dining table with a bench gives one side of the dining area continuous seating. With individual chairs opposite, the layout stays flexible. The right combination depends on the usable bench length, table legs and room to reach the bench.

Which bench length suits your dining table?

First measure the clear space between the table legs. If you want to slide the bench beneath the top, its length, height and any armrests must fit within that space. A bench shorter than the tabletop does not automatically fit between the legs.

Would you like to keep the bench in a fixed position along a wall? Then it is especially important that every seat reaches the table edge comfortably and the ends remain accessible. With an oval table, the distance to a straight bench increases at the ends. A suitable curved model can offer a different layout.

How many people fit on the bench?

Use the usable seat length, not just the outer dimension. As an initial allowance, use around 60–70 cm per adult. A seat length of 180 cm gives three people 60 cm each; an outer dimension of 180 cm may offer less usable space due to armrests or the shape.

A 160 cm bench is therefore not automatically a comfortable four-person bench. Also distribute the seats along the table edge and check the base position. Only count individual chairs if they retain enough legroom and elbow room.

Matching seat height and seat depth

A dining bench is intended for sitting at a table. Consider seat height, seat depth and backrest together. According to the product information, the straight Raster, for example, has a seat height of 50 cm; assuming all dining benches are 45 cm high can therefore lead to an unsuitable combination.

Measure the height to the underside of the tabletop and any rails. Test whether your legs have space and whether you can reach your plate without leaning far forward. A deep lounge sofa does not automatically suit a regular dining table.

A bench along the wall can create a calm room layout. Allow for skirting boards, the angle of the backrest and any radiators. Leave room at the ends to get in and out. Someone sitting in the middle often needs to slide past another seat.

Mark the complete bench and table on the floor. Also place the individual chairs and test the walkway when they are occupied. Space savings depend on this whole layout; a bench is not more compact than chairs in every room.

Combining a bench and chairs

You can coordinate the upholstery or repeat a colour in the legs. Matching colour names do not guarantee the same fabric or shade. Check the available versions and compare material samples if possible.
