Skylt is the best varnish for treating wood

Written by Erik Tobben — Founder & Furniture Expert, Industrial Home

At Industrial Home, we treat all our solid oak and walnut dining tables with Skylt varnish as standard — one of the best wood varnishes on the market. Not as a hidden extra, but simply included in the price. In this article, we'll tell you why we choose Skylt, how we apply it, and which tables benefit from this protection.

What is Skylt varnish?

Skylt is a professional water-based wood varnish, developed for both floors and furniture. It is an invisible finish: the varnish intensively protects the wood without affecting its character and natural appearance. The wood continues to look and feel like solid wood — but better protected.

Skylt complies with strict European VOC standards and contains no formaldehyde, nMP or harmful monomers. Safe for both applicator and user. Water-based, environmentally friendly and without an aggressive odor.

The benefits of Skylt varnish on your oak or walnut table

  • Stain-resistant — Skylt seals the pores of the wood, preventing liquids such as coffee, wine and grease from penetrating
  • Scratch-resistant — the varnish layer protects the surface against daily use, cutlery and sliding chairs
  • Hygienic — sealed pores mean no accumulation of dirt or bacteria
  • Easy to clean — a damp cloth is enough; no special products needed
  • Durably proven — Skylt has proven itself for over 12 years in harsh conditions
  • Retains natural appearance — matte finish that does not make the wood look plastic or artificial
  • Safe and environmentally friendly — water-based, no formaldehyde, complies with VOC standards

How do we apply Skylt? — 3 layers with a roller

At Industrial Home, we apply Skylt varnish manually with a roller, in three layers. This is how the process works:

  1. Preparation — the tabletop is sanded and cleaned so that the varnish adheres optimally
  2. First coat — a base coat of Skylt is applied with a roller and fully absorbed into the wood. This opens the fibers and ensures maximum adhesion
  3. Intermediate sanding — after drying, lightly sand for an even surface
  4. Second coat — the protective intermediate layer; increases the thickness of the coating and further fills the pores
  5. Third coat (topcoat) — the final matte topcoat that provides ultimate protection and appearance

The result: a table with a matte, silky smooth finish that protects against stains, scratches and daily use — without the wood losing its character.

Which tables receive a Skylt treatment?

The Skylt treatment is included as standard with all solid oak and walnut tables from Industrial Home. Tables with a ceramic, HPL, Fenix or Melamine top do not require varnish treatment — these materials are naturally low-maintenance and water-resistant.

Our walnut dining tables — treated with Skylt

Our solid walnut dining tables also receive 3 layers of Skylt varnish. Walnut is a dark, rich wood — Skylt preserves that deep color while protecting the surface.

Why choose a table with Skylt treatment?

A solid wood dining table is an investment for years — sometimes for generations. With a good varnish treatment, you ensure that the table still looks beautiful after years of daily use. Skylt offers that protection in a way that enhances the wood rather than covering it.

At Industrial Home, the Skylt treatment is not an option, but standard. This way, you never have to worry about the first glass of wine spilling, the coffee ring from your morning cup, or daily family use.

Frequently asked questions about Skylt treatment

Is the Skylt treatment permanent?

Skylt offers long-lasting protection — with normal use and maintenance, the treatment lasts for many years. With intensive use, you can have a new top coat applied after some time.

How do I maintain a Skylt-treated table?

Simply clean with a damp cloth. Use mild soap for stubborn stains. No aggressive cleaning agents or abrasive materials are needed.

Does Skylt change the color of the wood?

Hardly. The matte finish of Skylt is deliberately designed as an invisible finish: the wood retains its natural color and grain. For dark wood like walnut, there may be a subtle enrichment of the color — which actually makes the wood look even better.

Does the Skylt treatment also apply to ceramic and HPL tables?

No — and it's not necessary. Ceramic, HPL, Fenix and Melamine tables are naturally stain-resistant and water-repellent. These materials do not require varnish treatment.
