Types of Coffee Tables

Coffee tables come in countless shapes and styles. Which one suits your interior?

Round coffee table

A round coffee table fits perfectly in a space with many straight lines. The round shape brings balance and softness. Ideal for smaller living rooms, as it's easier to walk around than a rectangular version. Popular diameters: 60, 70, 80 and 90 cm. View our round coffee table page for more details.

Oval coffee table

The oval coffee table is an elegant intermediate form: combining the soft curves of an oval with the functionality of an elongated top. It pairs perfectly with an elongated sofa and offers more table surface than a round one. Check out our organic coffee table for whimsical oval shapes.

Rectangular coffee table

The most classic shape. A rectangular coffee table suits almost any sofa set and gives the living room an organised, clear character. Available in all materials and styles.

Organic coffee table

An organic or freeform coffee table does not follow strict geometry. The top has an irregular shape, inspired by nature. Very popular in Japandi and boho interiors. Each piece is unique.

Popular Materials

Mango wood

Mango wood is the popular material for coffee tables at Industrial Home. Its warm brown tones and characteristic grain give the living room an organic, authentic character. Mango wood is sustainably sourced and offers excellent value for money. View our wooden coffee tables for all variants.

Oak

An oak coffee table is the Dutch classic. Solid oak with an oiled finish fits into both rural and modern interiors. Hardness and durability are top-notch.

Ceramic

A ceramic coffee table is low-maintenance and modern. Resistant to rings, scratches, and stains. Available in marble look, concrete look, and solid colours. Ideal for families with small children or pets.

Glass

A glass coffee table provides an airy, spacious feel. Tempered glass is safe and strong. Popular in modern and minimalist interiors where you want to maximise optical space.

Concrete look

A coffee table in concrete look or with a real concrete top has a tough, industrial character. It combines excellently with metal legs and dark sofas.

Styles: From Industrial to Japandi

A coffee table helps define the style of your living room. We supply coffee tables in:

  • Industrial — metal and raw wood, robust and authentic
  • Japandi — Japanese minimalism + Scandinavian warmth, wood and neutral
  • Rural — warm, robust wood with a natural finish
  • Modern — clean lines, ceramic or glass, minimalism
  • Boho — organic shapes, wicker details, mango wood

Size Chart — Coffee Table Dimensions

Rectangular large 140–160 × 65–80 cm 3–4 seater corner sofa

Tip: The coffee table should ideally be 2/3 of the sofa's length. The height: 10–15 cm lower than your sofa's seat height (typically 40–45 cm).

Combining Coffee Table with your Sofa

A well-composed living room concept starts with a beautiful combination of sofa and coffee table. Consider:

Colour and material: Contrast often works well. A light sofa with a dark coffee table, or a wooden sofa with a ceramic table. You don't have to match everything — an interesting interplay of materials is often more beautiful.

Style: Maintain the overall style. An industrial interior calls for robust materials; a Japandi living room for calm, natural colours.

Function: Do you use the coffee table as a breakfast table, a workstation, or as a decorative display? For intensive use, a more robust material like ceramic or HPL is ideal; for purely decorative use, you can opt for organic mango wood or glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which coffee table suits my sofa?
As a rule of thumb: the coffee table should be 2/3 of the sofa's width. The height is 10–15 cm below your sofa's seat height. A round table suits a compact sofa; an oval or rectangular table better fits a larger corner sofa. Unsure? Our advisors are happy to help you.
What is the ideal height for a coffee table?
The standard coffee table height is 40–45 cm. This is 10–15 cm lower than the average seat height of a sofa. A coffee table that is too high is uncomfortable; one that is too low is inconvenient to use. At Industrial Home, you can determine the height yourself if you choose customisation.
Is a custom coffee table possible?
Absolutely! Customisation is our specialty. You choose the size, material, finish, and base yourself. Do you have your own design? Submit it, and we will produce it exactly as you wish.
What coffee table materials are there and how do they compare?
Mango wood: warm, organic, unique. Oak: timeless, durable. Ceramic: low-maintenance, modern. Glass: airy, spacious. Concrete: tough, industrial. Each material has its own character. Unsure about the right material for your situation? Contact us.
Why is a black coffee table so popular?
Black is timeless and fits into almost any interior. A black coffee table — in matte black ceramic, black metal, or dark mango wood — gives the living room a sleek, modern character. Black combines excellently with light sofas, wooden floors, and natural wall colours. View our special black coffee table page.
What shape coffee table for a corner sofa?
A rectangular or L-shaped coffee table works best with a corner sofa, as the straight lines align with the corner of the sofa. An oval or round coffee table can also work if you want to soften the overall look. Make sure the coffee table is not wider than the shortest side of your corner sofa, and leave 30-40 cm of walking space between the sofa and table.
What are the coffee table trends for 2026?
In 2026, organic shapes are popular — think round, oval, and free forms in mango wood or ceramic. Materials such as bouclé, travertine, and natural wood are trending. Floating coffee tables (on a narrow base) create an airy effect. Combinations of two small side tables instead of one large coffee table are also very popular.

Frequently Asked Questions

Trending in today's interiors

This product perfectly matches current interior trends: smoked oak, wabi-sabi, slow living, biophilic, fenix. Solid wood, organic shapes, and slow living design are central — furniture that is not only beautiful but lasts for generations. The combination of robust craftsmanship with timeless design makes this a long-term investment.

What is the height of a coffee table?+

Standard coffee tables are 35-45 cm high — lower than a dining table, so you can comfortably reach it from a sofa or armchair. Taller coffee tables (50-55 cm) are suitable if you also use them as a workspace or dining surface.

What size coffee table suits my sofa?+

Rule of thumb: the coffee table should be 1/2 to 2/3 of the sofa's length. For a 240 cm sofa, choose a table of 120-160 cm. In width: at least 50-60 cm for a comfortable table. And maintain 35-45 cm distance between the table and sofa for your knees.

Which material is most durable for a coffee table?+

HPL (scratch-resistant, low-maintenance) and ceramic (heat-resistant, stain-resistant) are the most practical choices. Solid oak is warm and beautiful but requires maintenance. Glass is fragile — less recommended with children or pets.

Does a round coffee table fit in a small living room?+

Round tables are ideal in small living rooms — no sharp corners and easier to walk around. A round table of 70-90 cm diameter already fits comfortably in front of a two-seater sofa.

Can I order a coffee table in the same style as my dining table?+

Yes — that's the strength of our configuration system. Choose the same tabletop material and base model as your dining table for a cohesive living room look.

Are coffee tables also height-adjustable?+

Some models are — a height-adjustable coffee table is handy if you also want to use it as a dining surface. This is not standard but possible upon request.
