How small should your coffee table be?

Measure the space between the front of the sofa and the furniture or walkway opposite. Subtract your desired distance from the sofa and the space needed to walk past the table. What remains is the maximum depth for the table arrangement.

For example: with 150 cm of available depth, a 40 cm gap from the sofa and a 60 cm passage, 50 cm remains for the table. These are example measurements; test the distances with your sofa, users and walkway. The distance needed to reach a cup is different from the space needed to walk comfortably past the table.

Round, square or organic?

• Round: no projecting corners on the top. Measure the full diameter; an 80 cm round table still needs 80 cm at its widest point. Browse round coffee tables.
• Square or rectangular: clear dimensions that are easy to mark out beside the sofa. A narrow rectangular model can fit an elongated space.
• Organic: the outline varies. Use the top view to see where the top projects and where space remains clear.

One small table or a set of two?

A set allows you to use the tables together or in different places. Measure both arrangements: close together and spread out. Not every set can nest; this depends on the heights, tops and bases. If space in the centre is limited, consider placing one piece beside the sofa.

For an extra surface beside an armchair, you could also consider a side table. Compare its height with the armrest or seat: a low coffee table may be difficult to reach beside a tall armchair.

Height, material and everyday use

Sit on your sofa and check the height at which you can comfortably put something down. Then measure the table in that position. A low lounge sofa often needs a different table from a firmer, higher sofa.

Wood provides visible grain; ceramic offers options including a stone look. A metal look is a finish and does not mean the whole piece is made of metal.
