Walnut Dining Table: why this wood is so special
The extraordinary world of walnut wood
Anyone who has ever seen a walnut dining table in real life immediately understands why this wood is so cherished. Its rich, dark brown color with golden-brown veins and a subtle sheen — walnut wood exudes luxury, warmth, and character like no other material. It is no coincidence that walnut has been the favorite wood of artisan furniture makers and interior designers for centuries.
At Industrial Home, we love working with walnut for our handmade dining tables, and in this guide, we'll tell you exactly why this wood is so special — and what to look look for if you want to purchase a walnut dining table.
What makes walnut so unique?
Walnut (Juglans regia or Juglans nigra) is one of the noblest wood types in the world. Its properties are impressive:
- Color and grain: the warm chocolate-brown color with pronounced grain and sometimes wavy patterns makes each piece unique.
- Hardness: walnut is hard enough to withstand daily use, yet soft enough to be pleasant to work with.
- Stability: walnut is dimensionally stable — it shrinks and swells less than many other types of wood.
- Durability: a well-maintained walnut dining table will last for generations and becomes even more beautiful with age.
- Finish: walnut absorbs oil and lacquer beautifully, achieving a deep, rich luster.
American Walnut vs. European Walnut
There are two main variants you'll encounter in furniture wood:
American Walnut (Juglans nigra)
Darker, richer in color, and with a pronounced grain. This is the variant most commonly used for luxury dining tables. The color ranges from chocolate brown to purplish brown with yellow and gray hues.
European Walnut (Juglans regia)
Slightly lighter in color with a more beige-brown tone. The grain is finer and more elegant. European walnut is rarer and thus more exclusive. At Industrial Home, we primarily work with high-quality European and American walnut, depending on availability and the specific project.
Walnut dining table in your interior
A walnut dining table is versatile and fits into many different interiors:
- Modern/minimalist: combine a sleek walnut top with a matte black steel frame for a timeless, luxurious look.
- Scandinavian: walnut works beautifully with light walls, leather chairs in cognac or cream, and natural linen.
- Industrial: the combination of dark walnut and raw wrought iron or steel creates a powerful contrast.
- Classic/eclectic: walnut blends seamlessly with classic interiors featuring rich fabrics, paintings, and antique elements.
Color advice: what to combine with walnut?
Walnut shines best alongside neutral colors. Think off-white, warm grey, terracotta, sage green, or deep blue. Avoid bright colors near the table — they compete with the rich wood. A light-colored floor (e.g., light oak or concrete) creates a beautiful contrast with the dark tabletop.
Maintenance of a walnut dining table
Walnut is robust but deserves good care:
- Clean daily with a damp cloth — never rinse with water
- Oil the tabletop twice a year with a high-quality wood oil (preferably linseed oil-based)
- Use placemats for hot pans or dishes
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight (discoloration)
- Small scratches? Lightly sand with fine sandpaper (320 grit) and re-treat with oil
Custom walnut dining table
Because walnut is an exclusive type of wood, most walnut dining tables are made to order. You choose the width, length, thickness of the top, and the type of base. This guarantees that the table perfectly fits your space and your taste.

Refurbishing or restoring a walnut dining table
Do you already have a walnut dining table but the top is starting to look a bit tired? Good news: solid walnut is eminently restorable. Here’s how to do it:
- Light sanding: Use 180–240 grit sandpaper for minor scratches; always finish with 320 grit for a smooth surface.
- Remove dust: Use a lint-free cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove all sanding dust.
- Apply oil: Rub in a coat of high-quality wood oil (linseed oil or Rubio Monocoat are popular choices). Let it soak in and remove the excess after 15–30 minutes.
- Repeat: Apply a second coat after 24 hours. After two to three coats, your table will look as good as new.
Good walnut tables become more exclusive with age, not less valuable — a restoration is almost always worthwhile.
The best chairs for a walnut dining table
The choice of chairs can make or break the overall look. These combinations work particularly well with a walnut dining table:
- Cognac or camel leather chairs: the warm brown tones beautifully complement the dark walnut
- Velvet or bouclé chairs: mustard yellow, deep green, or terracotta add character and warmth to the dining room
- Light, natural wood chairs: the contrast between light oak or beech chairs and dark walnut is graphic and timeless
- Matte black metal chairs: industrial-modern — works excellently in sleek, minimalist interiors
Make sure not to choose all elements in the same dark wood — variation in color and material creates more depth and a livelier interior. Check out our dining chair collection for inspiration.
