The right lighting above your dining table: how to do it right
Written by Erik Tobben — Founder & Furniture Expert, Industrial Home
The dining table is the heart of the dining room. And the lighting above it? That makes or breaks the atmosphere. A well-chosen pendant lamp above your table pulls the space together and creates that warm, inviting ambiance you want when dining.
How high should you hang a lamp above the dining table?
The ideal height is 70 to 80 cm above the tabletop. This way, you won't be sitting in the light, yet you'll have optimal atmospheric lighting precisely on the table. For higher ceilings, you can hang the lamp slightly higher — but never more than 90 cm.
One lamp or several?
For a long rectangular table, two or three smaller pendant lamps in a row work beautifully. For a round or oval table, one large statement lamp is often the better choice. Think about balance: the lamp should not be wider than half the table's width.
Which style suits you?
- Industrial — metal, wire, sturdy details
- Scandinavian — sleek, light, natural materials
- Classic — round shapes, warm light, timeless

By choosing a lamp that matches the style of your interior, you emphasize not only the importance of functionality but also the aesthetic aspect of your space. It is important to consider details such as color and materials, as these can align with other decor or furniture in the dining room.
To create an optimal lighting atmosphere, you can also consider adding additional light sources to your dining area. For example, accent lighting with chandeliers or wall lights can refine the overall ambiance of the room and provide more balanced illumination.

Color temperature: warm or cold light?
Above a dining table, always choose warm white light — a color temperature between 2700K and 3000K. This light is relaxing, makes faces look good, and creates an inviting atmosphere. Cold white light (4000K or higher) is functional but stark — fine for a home office, but not for cozy dining.
Also opt for dimmable lamps. For a festive dinner, you want different lighting than for a quiet breakfast. With a dimmer, you always have the right atmosphere without having to switch lamps.
Matching the lamp and your table
- Long rectangular table — use two or three identical pendant lamps in a row, parallel to the table length. Maintain a distance of approximately 60–70 cm between them.
- Round or oval table — one large statement pendant lamp centrally above the middle works best. The diameter of the lamp should be no more than half the table's width.
- Square table — one large round lamp or four small ones in a cluster provide a symmetrical and elegant result.
Additional lighting tips for the dining room
Lighting above the table works best as a supplement to other light sources in the room. Consider wall lights or indirect ceiling lighting that illuminates the background. Too great a contrast between a bright lamp above the table and a dark rest of the room is tiring for the eyes.
Do you have an open living room? Then it pays to divide the lighting by zone: dining area, sitting area, and kitchen, each with its own atmosphere. This gives the room depth and makes your interior look professional and well-thought-out.
