A wooden dining chair is the most honest piece of furniture that exists. No artificial coating, no fake pattern — just wood, in the shape of a chair, with a function that has been the same for a thousand years: sitting, eating, staying. A wooden dining chair fits into any interior and combines with any dining table. It is the most timeless chair choice you can make.

Why a Wooden Dining Chair?

In a world of plastic and composite materials, solid wood is a conscious choice. A wooden dining chair:

  • Is durable: a good wooden chair lasts 20–50 years
  • Is timeless: wooden chairs never go out of style
  • Is repairable: a loose leg can be glued, a scratch can be sanded
  • Has character: every piece of wood is unique — the grain, the color, the structure
  • Is universal: matches any dining table — wood, ceramic, stone, metal

Wood Types

Oak

Oak is the most popular wood type for dining chairs. Hard, durable, beautiful grain. Natural oak is warm and creamy-light. Stained oak can take on any color. Oak chairs pair with oak tables for a harmonious whole, or with other wood types for a mix-and-match effect.

Walnut

A walnut dining chair is a premium choice. The dark, rich color and rich grain give the chair a deep, warm character. Walnut combines excellently with a lighter table (oak or light ceramic) for a warm contrast.

Beech

Beech is a light, fine-grained wood type widely used in Scandinavian design. Hans Wegner's Wishbone Chair (one of the most famous chairs in the world) is made of beech. Beech is light, strong, and takes stains and paint well.

Seat: Solid Wood or Upholstered

A wooden dining chair typically has one of two types of seats:

  • Solid wooden seat: entirely made of wood, sometimes lightly curved (molded) for comfort. Honest, minimalist, robust. Ideal for short meals; for longer sitting, use a cushion.
  • Upholstered seat: a foam cushion with fabric or leather over a wooden frame. More comfort for prolonged sitting. The wood provides the character, the upholstery provides the comfort.

At Industrial Home, you can choose both. Even an intermediate solution is possible: a hard wooden chair with a loose cushion (easy to wash).

Styles

Japandi

Sleek, low, sparse in line. The Japandi wooden chair is functional to the bone — every element is there because it needs to be. Think of the Y-Chair or Wishbone Chair: a paper cord seat, wooden frame, beautiful proportion.

Scandinavian

Related to Japandi but slightly warmer. Light wood types, soft lines, sometimes an upholstered seat in natural fabric. The Scandinavian wooden chair is comfortable and friendly in shape.

Rural / Rustic

Thicker wood, stocky proportions, sometimes a woven seat of cane or rushes. The farmhouse-style chair is robust and cozy — warm and charming in a country kitchen or dining room.

Combinations with the Dining Table

Wooden dining chairs combine with almost all dining tables. Popular combinations:

  • Oak chair + oak table → monochrome harmony
  • Walnut chair + light ceramic table → warm contrast
  • Mix of two chair types → mix-and-match (deliberately irregular)
  • Wooden chairs on the long sides + upholstered chairs with armrests at the head

Frequently Asked Questions

Are wooden dining chairs comfortable for longer meals?

With an upholstered seat, absolutely. With a hard wooden seat, loose seat cushions are the solution. Ergonomically, the backrest is most important for comfort during prolonged sitting — choose a chair with a well-shaped backrest.

How do I maintain wooden dining chairs?

Dust regularly, wipe off stains with a damp cloth, oil oiled wood annually. Periodically check if the connections are still tight — tightening screws and re-gluing loosened parts significantly extends their lifespan.

Can I combine wooden dining chairs of different wood types?

Yes, and it looks deliberate and stylish. Make sure the style of the chairs is similar (both Scandinavian, or both robust) even if the wood is different. Never combine two styles that clash in character.

For intensive use, you can lightly re-oil the wood annually for optimal protection. Scratches and minor damage are usually easy to repair. A wooden chair with an upholstered seat combines the best of two worlds: the warmth and durability of wood with the comfort of a soft seat. Available in oak, walnut, and other wood types at Industrial Home.

Frequently asked questions

What wood types are available?+

Our wooden dining chairs are mainly in oak - both natural oiled, white oiled and dark oiled. Some models are also available in walnut or bamboo. Oak is the most popular choice due to its beautiful grain and durability.

Are wooden dining chairs more durable than upholstered?+

A wooden frame is extremely durable - lasting decades is normal with proper maintenance. The seat (if upholstered) may need to be renewed after 10-15 years. A chair with a wooden frame and loose seat is therefore more practical than a fully upholstered chair.

How do I maintain a wooden dining chair?+

Wipe with a slightly damp cloth. Lightly oil oak chairs annually with furniture paste to keep the wood nourished and prevent dryness. Avoid abrasive cleaning agents.

Does a wooden chair fit with an oak or walnut dining table?+

Certainly. Wood-on-wood can work beautifully - just choose the same wood type or something darker/lighter for a deliberate variation. Natural oak chair with a natural oak table: timeless. Walnut table with oak chairs: warm contrast.

Are wooden chairs less comfortable than upholstered ones?+

A purely wooden chair (without a cushion) is less comfortable for long dinners. Most of our wooden chairs have an upholstered or woven seat for comfort. Pure hard wood without a cushion is more of a bistro chair - functional but not for hours of sitting.

Do wooden chairs scratch the floor surface?+

Most wooden chairs have felt pads under the legs - replace them regularly if they are worn. On hard floors, this is essential to prevent scratches. This is less of an issue on carpet.
