Ceramic dining table: the easiest-care table there is

A ceramic dining table is the most practical table you can buy. No trivets for hot pans, no red wine stains, no scratches from plates or cutlery. For families with children, busy households or people who simply do not want to think about maintenance, ceramic is the logical choice.

What exactly is a ceramic dining table?

A ceramic dining table has a tabletop of pressed, fired and glazed ceramic - the same technique used for floor tiles, but in much larger formats and with a more refined finish. The ceramic top is always fixed to a substructure of MDF, steel or a combination of both.

The result is a top that:

  • Is heat-resistant up to 300°C
  • Is scratch-resistant (harder than steel)
  • Is completely stain-resistant - even red wine, coffee and olive oil leave no marks
  • Is UV-resistant - the colour does not fade in the sun
  • Is hygienic - ceramic is non-porous and does not absorb bacteria

Drawbacks of ceramic: being honest

Ceramic also has drawbacks you should know about before making a choice:

  • Breakable under hard impact - ceramic is not unbreakable. A heavy pan falling directly on the edge can cause cracks or chipping. This is rarely a problem in normal use, but it is good to know.
  • Feels cold - ceramic feels cooler than wood. That is a matter of taste: some find it fresh, others miss the warmth of wood.
  • Heavy - a ceramic top is considerably heavier than a wooden top of the same size. Moving house takes more manpower.
  • Less organic - ceramic has no unique grain or character like solid wood. Every top of the same colour looks identical.

Which colours and looks are available?

Ceramic dining tables are available in a wide range of finishes:

Marble print

The most popular look. White or light grey marble with dark veins - the luxurious appearance of real marble without the maintenance. Real marble is porous and absorbs stains; ceramic marble does not.

Concrete look

Industrial and modern. Light to dark grey, sometimes with subtle texture. Fits perfectly with an industrial or Scandinavian interior.

Stone look / Travertino

Travertine (travertino in Italian) is a popular natural stone look with warm beige-brown tones. At Industrial Home, the Travertino finish is one of the best-selling ceramic options.

Wood look

Ceramic with a wood grain pattern. The maintenance benefits of ceramic combined with the warmth of wood. Best viewed up close - the look is realistic but not identical to real wood.

Solid colours

White, black, anthracite - sleek and timeless. Suits a modern or minimalist interior.

Ceramic or wood: who is ceramic best for?

  • Families with young children - no stress about spills, scratches or crayons on the top
  • People who cook a lot and use the table as a work surface - putting hot pans straight on the top is no problem
  • Fans of the marble or stone look - without the drawbacks of real marble
  • People who want minimal maintenance - wiping with a damp cloth is all that is needed

Choose wood if you are looking for warmth, character and the feel of a living material.

Sizes of the ceramic dining table

  • 140 x 80 cm - 4 people
  • 160 x 90 cm - 4-6 people
  • 180 x 90 cm - 6-8 people
  • 200 x 100 cm - 8 people
  • 220 x 100 cm - 10 people

Ceramic tables are also available in round and oval shapes - the rounded version is extra safe for families with children.

How do you care for a ceramic dining table?

This is the best thing about ceramic: maintenance is minimal.

  • Daily - wipe with a damp cloth. No special cleaning products needed.
  • Stubborn stains - use an all-purpose cleaner or cleaning vinegar. Ceramic is resistant to almost all household cleaning products.
  • Sanding or oiling - never necessary. The ceramic top needs no periodic maintenance.
  • Edges - do keep an eye on the edges and the glue or silicone seam between the ceramic and the substructure. Slight ageing can occur here over time.

Ceramic dining table prices

A ceramic dining table is generally slightly more expensive than a comparable wooden table, due to the more expensive top material and the more complex production process. At Industrial Home, ceramic dining tables start from about €999 for a 160 x 90 cm model. The premium over HPL or oak is 20-40%.
